Hockey hall of famer Jim Paek

Jim Paek had to travel a long way in his ascent to the NHL. His South Korean birth certificate shows ample evidence of the physical and cultural distance he had to cover in the pursuit of his hockey dream.

His birth-given name was Chison Paek, but after his family immigrated to Canada when he was an infant, his parents gave him the name "Jim" to make his integration into Canadian society a little easier.

As Paek grew a little older, he took a keen interest in hockey. And, as he noted, good fortune came in the form of parental support to play sports, a benefit not commonly offered in the Korean community where a much greater emphasis is placed upon academics.

By the time he made the junior level with the Oshawa Generals of the OHA, Paek's parents were so enamoured with the sport that they attended 106 of his 108 games one season. From the OHA, Paek toiled for three seasons in Muskegon of the IHL before he joined the Pittsburgh Penguins in time for the playoffs of 1992. He lasted parts of three more campaigns with the Pens before he was traded to the Kings late in 1993-94.

After a 29-game stint with the Ottawa Senators in 1994-95, Paek returned to the IHL where he rounded out his pro career in Houston, Manitoba, Minnesota, and Cleveland.
